School is almost back in session, and thank goodness!
It is time for the little ones to go back to daycare, um, I mean school. Any who, summer can be stressful! Trying to balance work with entertaining the children is no simple task. Believe me, I have observed it first hand. Watching my mom try to come up with different ways to keep us out of her hair whilst working full time.
It is rough! With school starting next week this weekend is your last chance to have some good heartfelt family time with the kids. And the temperatures are cooking to be beautiful this weekend, so why not get out with the family and explore!
There are many options for this weekend. Make a beach trip, go to the park, visit the state fair, see the air and water show, go to the Cuban festival, see some local art, watch the Bears, or see a short play.
The Cuban Festival
The Cuban Festival is here and couldn't have come at a more appropriate time with the recently rekindled relationship between the U.S. and Cuba. This weekend in Belmont-Cragin celebrate Cuban culture with live music, dancers and dancing, yummy food, and other cultural activities. For more info click here!
Local art Hop
Today only, local galleries will be accommodating visitors on an art tour of Kankakee. What better way to spend your Friday night than gallery hopping? Seven local galleries and cultural centers will have their doors wide open. For more info click here!
10 Minute Play Festival
Love theater but have a hard time getting the kids to sit still for two hours? The 10 Minute Play Festival is right up your alley! There will be ten original ten minute plays for your enjoyment. Five of them will be produced, and the other five will be read. For more info click here!
Let’s go to the beach
With temperatures nearing the 90's this weekend, the beach doesn’t sound like a bad idea! And you’ll actually want to get into the freezing Lake Michigan waters with the heat. My favorite Lake Michigan Beaches are North Avenue Beach, Montrose Beach, and of course the beach at Indiana Dunes State Park. Don’t forget the the sunscreen, or the kids!
Trip to the Park
Illinois has a lot of beautiful parks worth exploring. Whether you want to do a park day right at home or make it a road trip, there are some beautiful destinations. Pack the hiking boots and the the fishing poles and head over to the Kankakee State park for some hiking and fishing. Grill what you catch at one of the park’s barbecues. If you're feeling more adventurous, head over to Starved Rock and rent a kayak for the day. Pack a picnic basket and lots of water. You might want to get the kids a separate kayak so they can explore on their own.
See the Bears get hot and sweaty this Saturday at ONU’s football field. You’ll want to get their early, it’s going to be packed as Saturday is one of the last days the Bears will be bracing the Bourbonnais weather. For more info click here!
A Day at the Fair
The Illinois State Fair is happening this weekend and is sure to be a hoot. See over 100 different County Fair Queens, horse racing, carnival rides, greasy foods, and guess what — you can even camp out overnight! For more info click here!
The Air and Water Show
Travel to North Beach in Chicago to see the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights in action. Bring a lawn chair unless you want to stand! Be prepared and bring some Bengay for your neck, because you’ll be looking up at planes for hours on end — but it’s totally worth it. For more info click here!
